ATHENS, Ga. – Hatter women's tennis showed some of the high-caliber talent on the roster in defeat against Georgia, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Magill Tennis Center. UGA is coming off an SEC Championship appearance and making the sweet 16 last season.
"Georgia were way too good today," head coach
Travis Sandlant said. "It was good to get a taste against a team that's going to go deep for a national championship. Tomorrow we have another
opportunity to show the level we can play with the nation's best."
Georgia were on Stetson from the outset with Ania Hertel and Anastasiia Lopata taking a 6-1 win on court 3. Meg Kowalski with Mell Reasco defeated
Cheri Darley and Pilar Harper on Court 2 to clinch the point. A bright spot for the Hatters was court 1.
Alanna DiFrancesco and Magda Hedrzak were ahead 4-2 over Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn.
Reasco, Grant and Kowalski won on courts 3,6 and 4, in that order, to confirm the match for the hosts. While this was happening, DiFrancesco was battling on court 1, dropping the first set to 19th singles ranked Lea Ma 6-1 but was leading in the second 4-2.
Cheri Darley on court 2 against Dasha Vidmanova, ITA rank 31 in singles, dropped the first set 6-3 and was pushing the second set, down by a game 3-2 when the contest ended.
Noa Cohen was in a similar situation having dropped the first set to Lopata 6-3, but was battling down 3-1 in the second set.
Stetson now turns it's attention to Southern California. The Trojans fell to Notre Dame 4-3 and will face Stetson tomorrow at 11 a.m. with live video and stats available on Georgia's website, link below and on the schedule page.
