Stetson Drops First Game of DBC to Dayton 75-54

Box Score

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Stetson Hatters women's basketball team kicked off the Daytona Beach Classic on Friday, Nov. 24, at the Ocean Center, facing the Dayton Flyers. Unfortunately, the day after Thanksgiving didn't unfold as the Hatters had hoped, resulting in a 75-54 loss to the Flyers.

Dayton took an early lead with a pair of three-pointers, including one from a second-chance opportunity, securing an 8-point advantage after winning the tip-off. Despite a jumper from Turner at the 7:16 mark breaking the Flyers' momentum, Dayton responded with a fast break layup and an and-1, extending their lead. Jordan Peete's layup cut the deficit to seven, but another three-pointer from the Flyers widened the gap to double digits.

Turner showcased her skills with a steal, setting up Jaelyn Talley for a lay-in, but Dayton quickly answered with another three. Despite Promise Keshi's layup on a fast break assist from Peete, the Flyers scored twice more, finishing the first quarter with a 21-8 lead.

In the second quarter, Stetson started strong as Khamya McNeal scored her first points after a turnover from the Flyers. Dayton then went on a 7-1 run, and Turner knocked down a pair of free throws. Turner contributed seven more points before McNeal scored, ending the first half with Stetson trailing 24-38.

Turner continued her impressive performance in the third quarter, scoring the first basket. Despite Treadwell and Fontaine's efforts to cut the deficit, Stetson still trailed 43-57 at the end of the third. In the fourth, Peete's three-pointer and Keshi's turnaround jumper brought Stetson within single digits, but Dayton secured the win with a final score of 75-54.

Despite the loss, Turner led the Hatters with a season-high 20 points, shooting 7 of 10 and making 6 of 7 free throws. Peete and McNeal also contributed double-digit points. The team shot 42.3% from the field and showcased solid free-throw shooting. Despite being outrebounded, Stetson dominated the paint 36-22 and forced 21 turnovers on defense.

Looking ahead, the Hatters will return to the court against Tennessee Tech at the Ocean Center in the continued Daytona Beach Classic at 3:30 PM.
