Box Score NEW ORLEANS - The Stetson women's basketball team commenced the new season on the road against the Tulane Green Wave in New Orleans. Despite their best efforts, the Hatters encountered a hard-fought 68-57 loss on Monday night.
Tulane initiated the game with a swift 6-0 lead, but Jamiya Turner's jumper, following a steal, jump-started the Hatters' offensive momentum. Jordan Peete, entering the game from the bench, made an immediate impact by hitting a crucial three-pointer and scoring on a layup after securing a board, reducing the deficit to 10-7.
The Hatters showed resilience as Diawna Carter-Hartley and Promise Keshi contributed back-to-back three-pointers, bringing the game within one point. However, the Green Wave managed to regain a three-point lead by scoring a pair of free throws just before the quarter break.
Stetson staged a comeback with a jumper from Kiya Turner and a pair of free throws from Jamiya, claiming the lead for the first time at 17-16. The game saw fluctuations, including last season's points leader Jaelyn Talley finding an open basket. Peete's successful three-pointer furthered Stetson's lead to 22-21.
Tulane closed the first half strongly, ending with a 19-12 run. Jamiya and Kiya contributed four points each during this phase, ensuring that Stetson stayed within reach, even as they trailed 40-34 at halftime.
Challenges emerged for Stetson in the third quarter as they were outscored 12-6. Despite efforts from Jamiya, Carter-Hartley, and Peete, the Hatters entered the final quarter trailing 52-40.
Turner and McNeal kick-started the offense with quick buckets, but Tulane responded with an 8-0 run. Peete's jumper interrupted their run before McNeal scored again. Stetson embarked on a 9-0 run, which included making seven free throws, cutting the lead to eight points. However, Tulane sealed the game with crucial free throws, resulting in a final score of 68-57.
Jamiya, who played for 26 minutes, led the team with 12 points, shooting 5 of 11. McNeal contributed 8 points and secured a team-high two steals. Talley led the team in rebounding with a total of 7 boards, while Peete made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc.
As a team, the Hatters shot 34.4% from the field (21-61), 22.2% from three-point range (4-18), and had an 11-12 record from the free-throw line. They outscored the Green Wave in the paint 28-18 and scored 13 points off of turnovers.
Looking ahead, the Hatters will continue their road stretch by visiting USF on Friday at 4:00 PM.
