DeLAND, Fla. - The Stetson University women's basketball team returned home to the Edmunds Center on Sunday afternoon where they picked up their third win of the season, defeating the Morgan State Bears 56-48 to stay undefeated at home.
In a game that saw four lead changes, the Hatters were powered to victory by senior guard
Jordan Peete, who dropped 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.
Stetson witnessed three players notching nine points each, with
Jaelyn Talley standing out by recording a team-high 14 rebounds, six of which were secured on the offensive end.
Talley initiated the Hatters' scoring by sinking a free throw before the Bears claimed their first lead of the game at the 8:40 mark in the first quarter.
Following an impressive 8-0 run by the Hatters, highlighted by a three-pointer from
Khamya McNeal, the Bears countered with consecutive layups.
Quentarra Mitchell, McNeal, and
Jamiya Turner all contributed baskets during a scoring stretch. However, the Bears responded with an 11-2 run, connecting on all three attempts from beyond the arc, reclaiming a one-point lead.
Mitchell sealed the opening quarter by sinking a pair of free throws with 35 seconds remaining, propelling the Hatters into the second quarter with a 19-18 lead—a lead they would maintain throughout the game.
Stemming from an assist from Turner, McNeal opened the second quarter with a three-pointer, marking her third consecutive game with two successful shots from beyond the arc.
The next basket didn't come until a minute and 30 seconds later when Turner scored on a layup, extending the lead to six.
That's when
Anna Kunzwiler caught fire. After a response from the Bears, the Hatters embarked on a 14-2 run— their most substantial run of the day. During this surge, the freshman guard showcased her sharp-shooting by sinking all three of her shots from beyond the arc. Notably, she executed a smooth stepback three with a minute and 51 seconds remaining in the half, extending the Hatters' lead to 16.
Fellow freshman
Sophia Fontaine was also a key contributor to Stetson's run, adding five points during that stretch.
Despite Peete hitting a three just under the one-minute mark, Morgan State's three-pointer with 35 seconds left in the second quarter sent the Hatters to the locker room with a commanding 41-25 advantage.
The opening basket of the second half didn't occur until the 7:36 mark when Mitchell finished a driving layup. Shortly after, she followed up with an assist to Talley, countering a Morgan State basket.
Talley further expanded the lead with a score on an assist from McNeal at the 4:34 mark, bringing the Hatters' advantage to 20 points, their largest lead of the game.
An ensuing 7-0 run by Morgan State was halted by Talley with a minute and 35 seconds remaining in the quarter after Mitchell came away with a steal.
The Bears began the final quarter on a 12-0 run, their longest run of the game. However, Peete interrupted their momentum with a driving layup after they narrowed the deficit to just four points.
In the closing minute, Talley secured the Hatters' victory by scoring on a contested layup, capitalizing on a pair of offensive rebounds.
Collectively, the Hatters displayed sharpshooting accuracy, making 20 of their 45 attempts from the field (44.4%). Their proficiency extended beyond the arc, as they successfully connected on six of their ten three-point attempts, marking their most efficient perimeter shooting performance of the season. Dominating the paint, the Hatters outscored the Bears 26-16 and secured 38 rebounds compared to Morgan State's 30.
Turner, who contributed four rebounds, is on the cusp of reaching a significant milestone, sitting just four rebounds away from the impressive 500 career mark as she looks to pull off that feat next week.
The Hatters, now 3-8, will return to Edmunds Center on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Holiday Hoops Classic when they host North Carolina A&T and Valparaiso. Both games are set for 11:00 AM tip-off and will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats on gohatters.com.
