Baxter Homers Twice to Lift Hatters to a Saturday Sweep

Stetson improves to 7-1 in last 8 games

DeLand, Fla. –- Through the first three weeks of the season, the Hatters have proven to be a team that never stops fighting.

Senior Marissa Baxter hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Stetson rallied for a 7-5 victory over Presbyterian Saturday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

Baxter then added another two-run shot in game 2 as the Hatters (10-5) completed the Saturday sweep with a 5-3 win over Cornell.

Five of Stetson's 10 victories this season have now come in walk-off fashion.

"We still need to clean up some approaches and some defense, but at the end of the day the girls fought back in that first game," Stetson head coach Shellie Robinson said. "I thought that was good. We have shown a lot that early in the season with quite a few walk-offs now."

Stetson had to rally from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Presbyterian. The Hatters scored two in the third and three in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead before the Blue Hose pulled even in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs and Evette Morgan on first, Baxter sent the first offering from Peyton Duncan over the fence in left.

"It felt good," Baxter said about her day at the plate. "The season didn't start the way I wanted it to, but I've kept working hard. I just focused on seeing the ball today and letting it travel."

The loss was Presbyterian's first setback of the season. The Blue Hose entered the game with a 12-0 mark, including a 3-2 win over North Florida earlier in the day. Baxter's homer was the first allowed by Blue Hose pitching all season.

In the night cap, Stetson jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Cornell behind Baxter's second long ball of the day. The Big Red (1-3) closed the gap to 4-3 in the fifth, but Stetson tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to help seal the victory.

With the win, Stetson improved to 7-1 in its last 8 games.

A pair of Hatter freshmen earned victories in the circle. Hannah Marien pitched three scoreless innings of relief to win the opener, and Caitlyn Kulczyski worked 4.2 innings as starter to win game 2.

"I think that they are going to be a big part of our staff, both this year and in the future," Robinson said about Marien and Kulcyzski. "It was good for them to get a couple of wins under their belt, to come out and attack pitches, and to get out of some tough innings."

Kami Eppley collected five hits on the day to raise her season average to an ASUN-leading .545.  Alyssa Gilman registered four hits, three runs and an RBI.

The Hatters will close the Stetson Invitational by hosting Presbyterian at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Notes: Stetson stole seven bases on the day ... The Hatters have posted four come-from-behind victories on the season ... Baxter became just the sixth Hatter all-time to hit an extra inning home run at Patricia Wilson Field, and the first since Lizzie Shubert in 2020.
