Hatters Drop Series Opener at Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan. - The Stetson Hatter baseball team hit the road on Friday afternoon, opening their first road series of the season by squaring off with the Wichita State Shockers. Despite grabbing an early advantage, the Hatters ultimately fell 8-4 on the day.

Stetson looked set to take an early lead, putting runners at the corners in the top of the first inning. After coming up empty in the game's first frame though, the Hatters (9-6) notched the game's first runs in the top of the third, using a sacrifice fly from second baseman David Bermudez and an RBI single from first baseman Landon Moran to take a 2-0 lead.

Wichita State (7-6) plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and added another in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead after five innings of play, before picking up another run in the seventh.

Stetson struck back in the eighth, when pinch hitter Lorenzo Meolo drove in shortstop Andrew Estrella with a double and pinch hitter Trae Harmon followed that up with a single to score Moran and cut the Shocker lead to 7-4.

WSU clawed a run back in the bottom of the eighth to push the lead to 8-4, designated hitter Tripp McKinlay led off the ninth with a single, but that was as much of a rally as the Hatters could manage, as he was stranded at first.

For the day, McKinlay was the only Hatter with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a double, and Meola picked up Stetson's only other extra-base hit with his eighth-inning double.

Stetson and Wichita State are back in action at Eck Stadium tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM, while Sunday's series finale, originally set for 2:00  PM, has been pushed up to a 1:00 PM start.
