Hobbs, Hatters Upset #16 Georgia 2-1

Stetson picks up second SEC win this week

Athens, Ga. -- The Hatters have apparently turned their spring break trip into a barnstorming tour through SEC country.

Three days after posting a 4-3 win over South Carolina in Columbia, Stetson took down #16 Georgia 2-1 Friday night in Athens.

Lauren Hobbs (6-1) went the distance in the circle once again, allowing just one run on four hits while facing one the top hitting teams in the country.

"Lauren threw another spectacular game, second game in a week, where she's just competed with an SEC team," Stetson head coach Shellie Robinson said.  "We played pretty good defense behind her, and we got a couple of timely walks and a hit-by-pitch to get our two runs, but again, hats off to her for what she did tonight."

After three scoreless innings which included a 1-hour, 45-minute rain delay in the middle of the second, Jayda Kearney gave Georgia (14-5) a 1-0 lead with a fourth-inning home run to rightcenter field.

The Hatters (13-6) answered right back, plating two in the top of the fifth without the benefit of a hit.  Haley Fox reached on a error, Jordan Stanfil reached on a fielder's choice, and Brianna Clary walked to load the bases.  With two outs, Evette Morgan drew a five-pitch walk to force in Fox with the tying run.  Pinch-hitter Briana Robinson was then hit by a pitch allowing Gia Napoli to trot home with the go-ahead run.

Stetson worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, but Georgia turned a lead-off walk in the sixth into a runner at third with two outs.  Hobbs, however, got Lyndi Rae Davis to fly out to left to maintain the 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Sydney Kuma lead off with a single to put the potential tying run aboard.  Hobbs then fanned Jaiden Fields for the first out of the inning and her sixth strikeout of the game.  The Hatters then turned a 4-6-3 game-ending double play to nail down the victory.

"The girls were very excited," Robinson said.  "It's always nice to win, but any time you beat a team you weren't expected to beat, there's a lot of excitement."

Georgia came into the game batting .339 as a team and averaging 7.3 runs-per-game, totals that ranked statistically in the top 25 in the country.  The Bulldogs (14-5) had won seven in a row.

Hobbs worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third inning.  For the game, Georgia left four runners on base and was 0-for-6 in two-out situations.  The Hatters earned their sixth come-from-behind win of the season.

Stetson had never defeated an SEC team on the road prior to this week, and now the Hatters have two such wins in a span of four days. They are also 2-0 against Top 25 opponents and 10-2 in their last 12 games overall.

Earlier in the day, Stetson fell 10-2 to Samford in five innings.  The Bulldogs (6-11) scored six in the first, three in the second, and one in the third to pull away early.  Kami Eppley tripled and scored for the Hatters in the fifth.

The Hatters will meet Samford and Ball State on Saturday in Athens as the UGA Bulldog Classic continues.
