USF Takes Two From Hatters in Wednesday Twinbill

DeLand, Fla. -- USF took both ends of a midweek doubleheader, defeating Stetson 2-1 and 13-1 Wednesday evening at Patricia Wilson Field.

Vivian Ponn hit a pair of home runs, drove in six, and picked up a victory in the circle to lead the Bulls (27-18). The Hatters fell to 22-20.

In the 54th and 55th all-time meeting between the longtime in-state rivals, Stetson broke on top first in each game.  In game 1, Gianna Niemeier drove in Brianna Clary with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.  The Hatters held the 1-0 lead until the sixth, when Ponn's two-run home run gave the Bulls the lead for good.

Lauren Hobbs went the distance, allowing six hits and one earned run.  She walked none and struck out six.

Gabriella Nori earned the complete game win for USF.

In game two, Niemeier led off the second inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Annabella McClerren. However, that would be the Hatters' only run of the game as the Bulls scored two in the third, three in the fifth, and eight in the sixth to pull away.

Alyssa Gilman had three hits on the day to lead the Hatters.  Sofia Boza collected a pinch-hit single in game 2 for her first career hit.

The USF-Stetson series dates back to 1985.

The Hatters will resume ASUN play this weekend when they head to Lynchburg, Va. to take on Liberty in a 3-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 10 a.m. Sunday.
