CONWAY, Ark. - After a come-from-behind, extra-inning victory on Friday night, the Stetson Hatters left no room for doubt on the outcome of Saturday's game, scoring early and often to pick up the run-rule victory. 13 hits and a solid outing from starter
Nick Durgin led the Hatters to a 12-2 win in seven innings.
After stranding a runner in each of the first two innings, Stetson (23-17, 11-6 ASUN) exploded for a five-spot in the third, when second baseman
Andrew Estrella was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and shortstop
Lorenzo Meola followed with a double off the wall in right field. Left fielder
David Bermudez plated Estrella with a single back up the middle, before a
Cameron Hill sacrifice fly drove in Meola to put the Hatters up 2-0. First baseman
Landon Moran singled to keep the inning going, and a productive out from catcher
Christian Pregent moved the runners over. Designated hitter
Daniel Labrador then broke the inning open, launching his second home run of the series, and his eighth of the season, out to left field to clear the bases and make the Stetson lead 5-0.
Solid baserunning and productive outs would help the Hatters add on in the fourth. After third baseman
Drew Wyers singled and moved to second on a balk, Estrella worked a walk. A wild pitch on ball four allowed Wyers to advance to third. Estrella would then steal second, and when the throw was made down to second, Wyers broke for home. The throw to the plate forced him back to third and into a run-down, but he was able to slide around the tag safely for a 6-0 lead. Estrella moved over to third during the rundown. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Moran lofted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Estrella and push the Stetson lead to 7-0.
Central Arkansas (16-22, 7-11 ASUN) got a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hatters weren't done, using a two-run single from Meola and RBI singles from Bermudez and Hill for an 11-2 lead. An RBI single from Wyers in the sixth pushed it to 12-2 and put the run-rule into effect.
Making his first start of the season, Durgin (3-2) picked up the win on the back of 6.0 innings of two-run, four-hit work that saw him issue just one walk and strikeout six.
Anthony DeFabbia threw the final inning for Stetson, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Leading off for the first time this season, Meola turned in a 3-for-4 performance, while right fielder
Jayden Hylton also went 3-for-4. Meola had a pair of doubles and two RBI and Hylton collected a triple and a pair of runs scored. Bermudez and Hill were the other Stetson batters to record multiple hits, with each going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in.
The win secures the series victory for the Hatters, who will look for their third ASUN sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM.Â
