Morgan's Walk-Off Homer Lifts Hatters Past FGCU

Stetson takes the series finale in dramatic fashion, 4-3

DeLand, Fla. -- In a season full of late-inning drama and walk-off winners, Sunday's finish tops the list.

Evette Morgan's two-out, 3-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Stetson to a 4-3 victory over FGCU Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.  Despite being down to their final strike, the Hatters (24-25, 8-10 ASUN) rallied to win the series finale and earn a huge win in the ASUN standings.

"It was a good weekend," Stetson head coach Shellie Robinson said.  "Obviously we had two losses yesterday, but we outhit them every game.  The first two games, we didn't get 'the' hit.  Today we did."

The Eagles (28-21, 10-8 ASUN) broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh, then retired the first two batters in the bottom of the inning to close in on a series sweep.  Brianna Clary kept the Hatter hopes alive with a two-out walk, and Gia Napoli followed with a single up the middle.

That set the stage for Morgan, who worked the count to 2-2 before depositing a deep drive over the fence in straight away center field.  It was her second career walk-off home run, and the Hatters seventh walk-off winner of the year.

"I have been telling her since her walk-off against Harvard last year, I need one good swing on one good pitch," Robinson said.  "I continuously tell her how great of a hitter she is. She knows her ability, and she came through."

"I was just trying to see the ball and look for a good pitch to swing at," Morgan said. "But without Bri and Gia getting on there, it wouldn't have been possible. I am just thankful for my teammates."

Morgan's teammates greeted her with a celebration at home plate.  The victory extended the Hatters' remarkable streak of seven straight win in series finales, all coming by a single run.

Stetson trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth when pinch-hitter Annabella McClerren delivered an RBI single to tie the game 1-1.  The Eagles battled back in the seventh to score two on RBI singles from Caridad Estes and Emily Chiarella.

"They are a great team," Robinson said.  "They fought back in the top of the seventh, got two insurance runs. Kudos to BC and Gia for getting on with two outs to make that comeback happen. That trend continues and that's been good for us."

Lauren Hobbs got the win, working 3 innings as a starter and the final 1/3 of an inning as a reliever.  Hannah Marien pitched 3.2 innings of relief, striking out four. Gianna Niemeier, Marissa Baxter and Alyssa Gilman each collected a pair of hits for the Hatters.  Jordyn Stanfill turned a barehanded catch of popped up bunt into a double play in the top of the third.

With six games left in the regular season, Stetson will head to Jacksonville next weekend for a 3-game series against the Dolphins.

Notes: Morgan is the only Hatter in Patricia Wilson Field history to hit a walk-off home run with her team trailing, and she has now done it twice ... Stetson has nine come-from-behind victories this season ... The Hatters are 13-2 when scoring four or more runs.
