TAMPA, Fla. – The Stetson Hatters used a stellar pitching performance from
Dylan Jacobs and an offensive performance that saw every starter reach base to close out their non-conference schedule with a win on Tuesday night, trouncing the South Florida Bulls 11-4.
Stetson (31-21) threatened early, using a singles from shortstop
Lorenzo Meola and first baseman
Landon Moran and a hit-by-pitch from designated hitter
Brandon Hylton to load the bases in the top of the first, before ultimately coming up empty-handed.
After the Hatters again stranded a runner, this time second baseman
Andrew Estrella who walked and stole second, left fielder
David Bermudez made good on the Hatters' threats, launching his sixth home run of the season out to right field to stake Stetson to a 1-0 lead.
Stetson added a pair in the fourth, getting singles from catcher
Daniel Labrador and Estrella to set the table. Meola and Bermudez picked them up, with Meola ripping a single up the middle to plate Labrador before Bermudez legged out an infield single to score Estrella and push the Hatter lead to 3-0.
After Jacobs surrendered his first hit of the game in the bottom of the inning, the Hatters broke the game open in the fourth, putting up four runs to extend the lead all the way to 7-0. After Moran and
Brandon Hylton opened the inning with back-to-back singles, right fielder
Jayden Hylton laced a double to left field to drive both runners in. Following a pair of outs, Estrella worked another walk. Meola picked up a single up the middle to drive in Hylton, and an error on the play saw Estrella score all the way from first to make it 7-0 Stetson.
The Hatters loaded the bases in the sixth on singles from center fielder
Cameron Hill, Moran, and
Jayden Hylton, before Labrador singled to right field to drive in Hill and Moran to make it 9-0.
USF (19-34) finally got to Jacobs in the sixth, scratching across a run to get on the board before adding another off the bullpen in the seventh.
Stetson got both runs back in the top of the ninth, with Bermudez and Hill launching back-to-back solo home runs to make the lead 11-2.
The Bulls would put up three runs in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little, too late as a strikeout ended the game.
The Hatters collected 20 hits on the night, their most since 2017 when they had 20 hits at Florida on March 21
st and at home against NJIT on March 31
st. Every Hatter reached base on the night, highlighted by Bermudez (3-for-6, 2 HR, 3 RBI), Hill (3-for-6, 1 HR, 2 runs), and
Jayden Hylton (3-for-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI). Meola, Labrador, and Moran also tallied three hits on the night.
Jacobs (2-2) was dominant in earning his second win of the season, limiting the Bulls to just one run on four hits while walking three. He struck out seven in 6.0 innings of work.
The Hatters are back at in on Thursday night in Charlotte, North Carolina, opening their final ASUN series of the season at Queens. The Hatters and Royals will square off at 6:00 PM on Thursday and Friday night and 1:00 PM
