DELAND, Fla. - The mission was simple for the Stetson Hatters on the third day of pool play at the ASUN Tournament: win and keep a chance at advancing alive, lose and go home. The Hatters answered the call, toppling the Austin Peay Governors behind a complete game from sophomore right-hander
Dylan Jacobs. The win was also a big one for head coach
Steve Trimper, as it was his 200
th in his time at Stetson.
Jacobs continued his recent run of strong outings on the mound, collecting his first career complete game while holding the Governors to a pair of earned runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out a career-high 11 batters.
Austin Peay (25-32) would score first, turning a double to deep right-center field into a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead in the first but the Hatters would respond emphatically in the bottom of the inning, sending 12 men to the plate and striking six times on five hits. A pair of free bases opened the inning when shortstop
Lorenzo Meola was hit by a pitch and left fielder
David Bermudez worked a walk. Center fielder
Cameron Hill got the run back for Stetson (34-22) with a double down the right field line, and catcher
Christian Pregent put the Hatters on top 3-1 with a single back up the middle. Designated hitter
Brandon Hylton then piled on, blasting the first pitch he saw 454 feet to right-center to give Stetson the 5-1 lead with his eighth home run of the season. Right fielder
Jayden Hylton followed with a double to right field and moved to third on a wild pitch, before third baseman
Drew Wyers drew a four-pitch walk. Meola, in his second at-bat of the inning, singled back up the middle to plate Hylton and put the Hatters up 6-1.
An unearned run from the Governors in the cut it to 6-2 in the top of the second, but Pregent took the run back in the bottom of the frame, blasting his team-leading 12
th home run of the year off the scoreboard in left field to make push the lead back to five at 7-2.
Jacobs retired the side in order in both the third and fourth, and his offense continued to support him in the fourth, when walks to Moran, Pregent, and Wyers loaded the bases before second baseman
Andrew Estrella poked one through the right side to plate a pair, and Meola singled home Wyers to extend the lead to 10-2.
After Hill doubled off a runner at first base to help Jacobs work around a walk in the fifth, the Hatters got an unearned run on an error off the bat of Pregent to score Hill and go up 11-2.
APSU got a solo shot in the seventh, but the Hatters again got the run back, when Moran led off the eighth with a double and scored on a single from Pregent push the lead back to nine and end the day's scoring.
The Stetson offense collected 13 hits on the day, with Pregent leading the way at 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Meola, Estrella, and
Brandon Hylton all went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
For Trimper, the win was the 200
th of his career as the skipper of the Hatters, and the 681
st of his career.
Now all the Hatters can do is sit and watch tonight's nightcap, which features the Jacksonville Gamecocks taking on the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. An EKU win advances the Hatters to Saturday's ASUN Tournament Semifinals, while a JSU win sees the Gamecocks move on.
