Austin Peay Edges Stetson in ASUN Play-In Game

Hatters Fall 2-1 in Eight Innings

DeLand, Fla. -- Austin Peay broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the top of the eighth and held on defeat Stetson 2-1 Tuesday afternoon in an ASUN Softball Championship play-in game at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters conclude their 2023 season with a 28-28 mark.

The win-or-go-home game featured a low-scoring affair and a good pitchers' duel between Lauren Hobbs and Jordan Benefiel.

Hatters' centerfielder Annabella McClerren turned a fly out into an 8-3 double play in the top of the third to help keep the game scoreless.

Stetson (28-28) struck first in the bottom of the third on a two-out, RBI single by Gia Napoli that scored Kami Eppley from second.

The Governors (27-22) answered right back with a solo home run by Lexi Osowski-Anderson in the top of the fourth to tie the game 1-1.

The game remained knotted through seven and moved to extra innings.  In the eighth, Kylie Campbell beat out an infield single that scored Charley Pursley all the way from second to give Austin Peay a 2-1 lead.  The Hatters nearly got the game tied with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but a perfect relay throw cut down the potential tying run at the plate.

The win moves Austin Peay into the double elimination portion of the bracket.

For the season, the Hatters saw a seven-win improvement from a year ago to finish with the most wins since 2016 (28).  Stetson's 12 ASUN victories also marked the team's highest total since 2014.
