Hatters Fall Short to the Hurricanes

DELAND, Fla.- Despite strong play the Stetson Hatter's fell short to the Miami Hurricanes 3-0 in the season opener at the Athletic Training Center on Thursday.

Stetson started out the first half strong with an opportunity for Alexa LoBasso in the 18th minute as the shot just went wide of the left post. The Hatter's controlled much of the first half play despite Miami scoring a goal in the 34th minute of the first half.

Although Miami scored two second half goals, the Hatters continued to push the pace and saw another opportunity in the box as Annika Seem just put the shot over the cross bar.

Freshman goalkeeper Mallory Osborn had her first career start in net where she made five saves against the Hurricanes. Including an opportunity late in the second half where she kicked out her leg to stop a rocket of a shot in the 87th minute. Centerback Anna Brethauer was all over the defensive fourth of field as she was able to block and stop many of Miami's attempts to advance the ball.

Ultimately, the offensive prowess of the visiting Canes was too much for the resilient Hatters as they suffered a 3-0 loss to begin the season.

Stetson took five shots as a team and recorded a corner kick in each of the halves. Leading the Hatters in shots was LoBasso with two attempted shots. Kylie Overstreet, Seem, and Alexis Smith each attempted a shot with the latter having a shot on goal.

The Hatters will retake the pitch at the ATC on Sunday at 1:00 PM when they face-off against the visiting Air Force Falcons.
