THE LEAD
Stetson Men's Soccer returns home to the Athletic Training Center as they continue conference play against the Jacksonville Dolphins on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 PM. The Hatters look to rebound after dropping their last match in a 0-4 loss to Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The all-time series has been deadlocked as the two teams remained even at 9-9-4 through their first 22 games against each other. The 23rd matchup between the Sunshine State foes will take place in DeLand, where the Hatters hold a slight 5-4-1 record. Stetson enters the game on a two-game win streak over the Dolphins with their last win coming on Oct. 22, 2022 when
Andres Mata led the Hatters to a 2-1 victory with a pair of goals. The series dates back to Oct. 22, 2006 when the Hatters took the inaugural game in a 1-0 effort at home.
SCOUTING THE HATTERS (4-3-2, 1-1-0 ASUN)
The Stetson men's soccer team is heading into their upcoming matchup with a 4-3-2 record, including a 1-0 start in conference play. After riding a two-game win streak, featuring game-winning scores from Mata and
Luis Lara against North Florida and Florida Atlantic, the Hatters dropped their most recent outing, a 0-4 road loss to FGCU last Saturday.
The Hatters have been great at home, holding a 3-0-1 record. Their offense remains a top of the ASUN, leading in shots with 147, including 60 on goal. Moreover, they rank second in both goals scored (18) and assists (16) in the conference.
Lara and Mata are tied for third in the conference with 4 goals each, while also being tied for fourth in total points with 9 apiece. Supporting the attack, Charles Ahl and Xavi Csato are both tied for third in the conference with 3 assists each.
Ten different Hatters have contributed with goals this season, and another ten have recorded assists, showcasing their depth and versatility.
In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Nicolo Radaello has been a steady presence, starting all 9 games, facing 94 shots, and making 29 saves. He's played a crucial role in securing two solo shutouts and one combined shutout for the team.
SCOUTING THE DOLPHINS (2-5-2, 0-2-0 ASUN)
Jacksonville began their season with a competitive slate that say them fall to an early 0-4 record that included a 1-3 loss to #4 Duke. The Dolphins then won their next two games before suffering another loss and settling for ties in both conference matches against Florida Gulf Coast University and North Florida. Saturday's game will mark the first road conference game of Jacksonville's season.
Offensively, the team has scored nine goals and recorded six assists so far. They rank fourth in the ASUN conference in terms of shots taken, with 93 shots, 43 of which have been on target. On the defensive side, they've allowed an average of 1.33 goals per game.
The trio of forwards Olivier Correa, Mason Duval, and Carson Wood have each tallied a pair of goals while Duval leads the pack with 24 shots attempted on the year. Three other Dolphins have recorded a goal this season including midfielder Kasper Davidsson, who also has an assist to his name. Freshman midfielder Iver Skorve leads the team with three assists, demonstrating his playmaking abilities.
In goal, Christian Sekanina, a sophomore from Germany has been a steadfast presence, starting all nine games and facing 103 shots while making 37 saves and allowing 12 goals.
Head Coach Ali Simmons entered his first year as the head coach of the men's soccer program in the 2023 season. Simmons took over the program after most recently serving as the Associate Head Coach at Elon for the last two seasons.
