DeLAND, Fla. - The Stetson University women's basketball team returned home to the Edmunds Center on Saturday afternoon but fell to the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles 66-51, putting an end to their four game win streak.
Leading the Hatters in scoring was none other than
Jamiya Turner, who was presented before the Green Out with the game balls from earlier this season when she reached 500 career rebounds and 1,000 career points. The redshirt-senior went 4-of-8 from the field to finish the day with 14 points, six of which came from the charity stripe.
Turner stood out as the sole Hatter to achieve double figures, marking her 11th instance of reaching 10+ points this season and the fourth time in the last five games.
The game started with a formidable defensive display by the Hatters, holding the Eagles to a mere 1-of-13 shooting from the field. Despite allowing only one made field goal, the Hatters held a narrow one-point lead at the corner turn. Notably, the Eagles saw seven first quarter points come from the line.
Following a minute and 30 seconds of tightly contested scoreless action at the start of the game, the Hatters made the first move as Turner confidently sank both of her shots at the line.
Stetson expanded their early lead to 6-0 as
Jordan Peete and
Jaelyn Talley contributed with consecutive lay-ups. The latter of the two baskets was facilitated by a
Skylar Treadwell assist.
Florida Gulf Coast University concluded the quarter with an 11-4 run. Treadwell contributed to the score with a dish from Peete, and the Eagles hit a three-pointer just over two minutes before the quarter ended, marking their first basket.
Freshman guard
Anna Kunzwiler halted a 6-0 run by the Eagles at the start of the second quarter by sinking a three-pointer from the wing. This shot, her only attempt of the game, marked her first successful three since the victory over Valparaiso on Dec. 20.
Following an ensuing 6-2 run by the Eagles,
Quentarra Mitchell interrupted the momentum with a lay-up. The graduate guard then secured a steal on the in-bound pass after a Treadwell free throw, ultimately resulting in a three-pointer by
Khamya McNeal. This play narrowed the deficit to two points.
The 7-2 run from FGCU, where Turner also contributed a lay-up for Stetson, concluded when Mitchell scored on a feed from
Jordan Peete. In the final minute of the opening half, both teams traded baskets, and freshman
Diawna Carter-Hartley made a shot with just 17 seconds remaining.
FGCU started the second half with a strong 9-0 run, but Stetson responded with a pair of free throws from Talley and a lay-up from Peete, reducing the deficit to ten. However, following Peete's basket, the Hatters were outscored 17-9, with Turner contributing five points. Mitchell halted what initially was a 5-0 run for the Eagles, while McNeal added two points from the line.
Entering the final quarter with a 57-39 deficit, McNeal initiated the fourth by scoring as the Hatters aimed to stage a comeback. Turner followed up with another score approximately two minutes later, responding to an FGCU basket after Treadwell found her for her fourth assist of the game.
After Turner's successful shot, the Hatters embarked on a run that featured four points from Talley, all obtained at the charity stripe, and a basket by Treadwell. The teams subsequently traded baskets to conclude the game, with Turner sinking the final shot from the elbow. Despite their efforts, Stetson fell 66-51 to their in-state conference rivals.
As a team, Stetson achieved a shooting percentage of 42.1%, making 16-of-38 attempts from the field. In a game that involved a total of 44 free throw attempts, the Hatters went 17-of-23 from the line. Despite the loss, both teams secured an equal number of rebounds, totaling 29 each. Notably, the Hatters outperformed the Eagles in the paint, leading 24-14.
