CORAL GABLES, FL — The Stetson women's basketball team dropped its 2024-25 season opener on Monday afternoon, falling 78-53 to the Miami Hurricanes on the road.
Three Hatters scored in double figures, led by newcomer Cameron Thomas with 11 points. Returning forward Quentarra Mitchell added 10 points and four steals, while Tiasia McMillan also contributed 10 points and two steals.
Stetson forced 19 Miami turnovers, converting them into seven points, with Quentarra Mitchell leading the defensive effort with a game-high four steals.
The Hatters got off to a strong start, leading 16-13 at the end of the first quarter thanks to four three-pointers that accounted for 12 of their 16 points. However, Stetson struggled offensively in the second quarter, falling behind 32-25 at the half.
The Hurricanes extended their lead after the break, outscoring Stetson 21-13 in the third quarter to take a 53-38 advantage into the final period. Miami continued to pull away, building a 71-43 lead before the Hatters mounted a brief 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 71-50 with 1:51 remaining but it was not enough as the Hurricanes closed out the game with a 78-53 final score.
Stetson, now 0-1, will host Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in their home opener, kicking off a Double Hatter event with the men's team.
