DeLAND, Fla. - The Stetson University baseball team concluded the weekend with a 9-1 win over the Fordham at Melching Field at Conrad Park on Sunday afternoon.
Daniel Paret led the Hatters to victory in his second start of the season while
Gio Cueto extended his RBI streak to seven straight games to begin the season.
"I think that was really a statement win for us as a team, we didn't play well last night but that's going to happen early in the season and for us to come out right there and play very clean. We got very good pitching out of Paret, bullpen did a good job with Coppersmith coming in and picking it up and we capitalized on their mistakes, a walk or passed ball or an error, we were able to do something with it," said Head Coach
Steve Trimper. "The guys played very aggressive today and we have to keep the gas pedal down and so losing streaks happen because you always do the should've, would've, could've game and we're not doing that, we're going forward and learning from our mistakes, building our confidence and getting better."
The Hatters struck first after
Lorenzo Meola and Kyles Jones began the Stetson side with a pair of walks before
Landon Moran reached on a fielder's choice that led to a run on a throwing error by the defense.
Jayden Hylton extended the early lead to 2-0 when he laced a single to right field to plate Moran, who reached second base on a throw during the fielder's choice.
Despite a leadoff homerun from the Rams in the top of the third, Paret rebounded by striking out two batters to end the Fordham side. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Moran was hit by a pitch before Hylton drove in the run with an RBI double down the right field line. Following a pitching change, Cueto roped an RBI single to center field to plate Hylton, extending his streak to an RBI in every game so far this season, as the Hatters jumped out to a 4-1 lead.
Paret continued to deal as he struck out the first two batters of the fourth inning in a scoreless side.
The Hatters broke the game open even further in the bottom of the inning.
Evan Griffis scored on a wild pitch after leading off the side with a walk. A throwing error by the pitcher would result in
Yohann Dessureault scoring from third after reaching on a single through the right side. Meola scored on a sacrifice fly from Hylton after reaching on a fielder's choice to third base while Dessureault avoided the tag at third to put runners on the corner with one out.
In the top of the sixth, Fordham loaded the bases with two outs, forcing Paret out of the game. In relief, redshirt-freshman
Zane Coppersmith struck out the Rams' batter in only three pitches to keep the 7-1 Stetson lead in tact.
Cueto extended the Hatters' advantage in the bottom of the seventh when he doubled to right center with one away to plate Moran, who led off the side with a single to right field. Following a six pitch walk to
Daniel Labrador, Dessureault roped a double to right field to drive in Cueto.
The score would remain the same as Stetson would hold on to take a 9-1 win over the Rams for their fourth win of the regular season and second win of the weekend.
Paret went 5.2 innings to secure his first win of the season as he allowed four hits while striking out six batters. Coppersmith pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Paret, while striking out three batters and holding the Rams hitless.
Hylton, who delivered a big game on Saturday night, came through once again, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs whil Cueto went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.
Stetson, now 4-3, will return to Melching Field at Conrad Park on Tuesday night as they host the Florida Gators at 6:30 PM. All the action will be streamed to ESPN+ while live stats will be available at gohatters.com.
"It's a ballgame. It's 90-foot base paths today and it will be on Tuesday so we don't care who the opponent is, we're going to play our best game, no matter if we play Florida or Miami or Texas or DeLand High School," said Trimper ahead of Tuesday's matchup. "Whoever is on our schedule, we have the same plan, we go out there and try to out-hustle teams, we try to play as clean as we can and we don't lose our hustle so our mindset is that it's a ballgame that we have to go out and win and have to be 1-0 on Tuesday."
