DELAND, Fla. – Stetson hosted the DeLand Double Duals on Saturday and honored twelve seniors three from the men's side and nine from the women's team. The Hatter men raced against Embry Riddle, Jacksonville, Rollins, and Wesleyan. The women's team faced off against UConn, Drake, Rollins, Embry-Riddle and Nova Southeastern.
"Today was a great day to celebrate our 12 seniors. We started off with perfect racing conditions and ended with a full family send off," said Stetson head rowing coach Jamie Frances.
The men's team competed in the varsity 8+ finishing first in both races. The first race of the day they finished in 5:56.7, eleven seconds ahead of the next boat from Rollins and sixteen seconds faster than third place Embry-Riddle. In the second race for the men they bested Jacksonville with a time of 6:04.9, almost two seconds ahead of Jacksonville.
The women's team raced four boats on the day. The varsity 8+ finished with a time of 7:03.2, four seconds behind Connecticut and 25 seconds ahead of third place Drake. The second varsity 8+ saw the same finish with Stetson finishing second 7:25.1 behind Connecticut 7:15.4 and ahead of Drake 8:05.6.
The varsity 4+ saw Stetson finish second 8:29.3, behind Connecticut 8:20.1 and in front of third place Drak 9:18.3. The second varsity 4+ was the closest race of the day for Stetson as they were edged out by Rollins by .6 seconds to finish second.
"Overall, we had a good day of racing and we saw improvements over last week. The race of the day had to be the women's second four. They were edged out by Rollins by .6 seconds. With another 10 meters we could have won, but credit to the brand new rower Tess Menten and coxswain
Alexis Stivali in that boat. I am very excited to see how the rest of the season plays out," said Frances.
