DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson Hatters rallied for the third straight game as they defeated the Lipscomb Bisons in a pair of 7-6 walk-off wins on Sunday afternoon. The first game, which was postponed due the inclement weather on Saturday night, was resumed on Sunday with the Hatters trailing 2-0 before Daniel Labrador delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly to cap off a two-run ninth inning. The second game was initially a seven-inning contest that was ended in the eighth, walking it off on a single off the bat of sophomore Isaiah Barkett.
"Baseball is crazy, huh? Today, we came back from being down and obviously took advantage of some of their mistakes but this team has no quit right now and that's a really nice thing. It's not a coaching thing, this is a confidence thing, my job is to believe in them and build that confidence this time of year," said Head Coach Steve Trimper. "Our biggest thing is preserverance and confidence, right now when someone makes a mistake, we're pouncing on who's going to pick him up and that's what we did today."
Zane Coppersmith picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Stetson in game one. The right-hander went one shutout inning while giving up one hit. Senior Aric McAtee also made an impact on the mound for the Hatters, starting the ballgame and throwing four innings, giving up two runs on three hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Offensively, the Hatters were led by sophomore Jayden Hylton, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and four RBI. Labrador put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Junior Gio Cueto also helped out for Stetson, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
Trailing 3-0, the Hatters first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Stetson's offense started clicking as Labrador provided an RBI double down the right field line to give the Hatters their first run . They then went on to put up four more runs in the inning after a grand slam off the bat of Hylton laucnhed Stetson out in front. It was his third home run of the season and first since the loss to Army on Feb. 24.
Lipscomb then rallied to take a 6-5 lead before Stetson scored two runs in the bottom half of the ninth to grab the win, walking it off when freshman Juan De La Cruz came across to score on a Labrador sacrifice fly.
Senior Cole Stallings earned his third win of the season out of the pen for Stetson in game two. The right-hander went 3.1 innings, giving up one run without giving up a hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. While senior Daniel Paret was a no-decision in the start, he struck out five Bisons batters over 4.1 innings.
In the batter's box, the Hatters were led by sophomore Lorenzo Meola, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Freshman Kyle Jones furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Barkett also chipped in for Stetson, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
The Hatters got the scoring started early and never surrendered the lead, putting two runs on the board in the bottom the first inning when Meola left the yard with the leadoff man Jones aboard.
The Bisons failed to push any runs across before the Hatters offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Stetson picked up two runs when a single from Jones scored sophomore Landon Moran and Barkett, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Hatters.
Lipscomb narrowed Stetson's lead to 4-2 before the Hatters stretched the advantage to 6-2 in the fourth inning. The Hatters scored twice, with one run coming across on Meola's single.
Lipscomb then rallied to tie the ballgame at 6-6 before Stetson walked it off in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single off the bat of Barkett with a full count and two outs.
The Hatters out-hit the Bisons at an 20-14 clip over the two games. They went 7-for-14 (.500) with runners in scoring position. Stetson's pitching staff faced 73 Lipscomb batters in the game, forcing ten ground balls and 22 fly balls while striking out 16.
