ATHENS, Ga, - The Stetson University baseball team hit the road for the first time this season as they fell to the Georgia Bulldogs 11-5 on Wednesday night at Foley Field in Athens, Georgia. It marked the first start of
Logan Hughes' career as the freshman hit not one but two homeruns in his debut.
Daniel Labrador also hit his first homerun of the season, coming in the top of the ninth as a pinch hitter. Seven different Hatters contributed on the mound, including starter
Ty Van Dyke, as Stetson combined to strikeout 11 batters.
Georgia struck first, taking a 2-0 lead with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first. After a solo shot extended the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0, Hughes crushed a solo shot of his own to left field, the first of his career.
The DeLand native wasn't done there. The freshman put the Hatters out in front with a three-run shot to right field in the top of the fifth, plating
Gio Cueto, who reach on an error, and
Brandon Hylton, who singled to left field.
Georgia reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning with a two-out bases clearing double. The Dogs added to their advantage in the bottom of the sixth when they tallied five runs to take an 11-4 lead.
After
John Modugno and
Matthew Heyl kept Georgia off the board, Labrador entered the top of the ninth as a pinch hitter and connected on a deep drive to right field for his first of the year.
Van Dyke made his second start of the season, going 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three.
Stetson will return home to Melching Field at Conrad Park in DeLand, Fla. for a four-game series with Bradley University. The weekend will start with Bark at the Park at 6:30 PM on Friday night.
