DeLAND, Fla. - The Stetson University women's basketball team's season came to an end in the ASUN Championship Quarterfinals, falling to Austin Peay State 49-45 on Saturday night at the Edmunds Center. In a season that saw the Hatters earn the #2 seed following a 17-13 season, 12-4 within conference play, the Hatters dropped the Quarterfinal matchup for the second straight season. After holding Austin Peay State to a low of 42 points against conference opponents when they first met, the Hatters held the Governors without a double-figure scorer.
In a game that saw the lead tie three times, the Hatters never led in the contest as they fell behind 19-8 after the first quarter. After the two teams each tallied 11 points in the second quarter, the Hatters trailed 30-19 at halftime. Stetson would go on to outscore the Governors 26-19 in the closing half as the Hatters put up 19 points in the final quarter but the score remained in favor of the Governors.
Jordan Peete and
Jaelyn Talley combined for 30 points with each player tallying 15 points. The latter of the two finished with a 15 point-10 rebound double-double on 6-of-9 shooting, her third of the season. While
Jamiya Turner was held to just six points, she reeled in eight rebounds and was a force on defense with a pair of blocks and one steal.
Despite the loss, the Hatters outrebounded Austin Peay State 33-31 while outscoring them in the post 24-22. Stetson also recorded less turnovers, forcing the Governors into 17 but converting them into 11 points.
As a team, Stetson shot 14-of-49 from the field, 28.6 percent, while hitting 17 shots from the charity stripe. After allowing the Governors to shot 50 percent in the opening quarter, the Hatters defense locked down, limiting Austin Peay State to 28.5 percent shooting, 8-of-28, across the final three quarters.
