Stetson Out-Hits Florida State 9-7, but Falls 7-2 in NCAA Regional Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Despite picking up nine hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Florida State, Stetson was unable to push ahead, as the Hatters lost to the No. 8 Seminoles 7-2 in the opening game of the 2024 NCAA Baseball Regional on Friday afternoon in the Capital City.

Junior Dylan Jacobs, now 1-2 on the season, got the ball to start for Stetson in his return to Florida State but took the loss as the Hatters fall to 40-21. Senior Nick Durgin was a bright spot for the Hatters, coming out of the bullpen and throwing two shutout innings, allowing one hit. entering in relief, TJ Melani went three innings and struck out a pair of batters, he was the lone Hatter pitcher to record a punchout in the contest.

The Hatters were trailing 2-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Stetson got on the board thanks to sophomore Isaiah Barkett's RBI double down the left field line with two outs.

The Seminoles expanded their lead to 5-1 before the Hatters offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the sixth. After roping a double to right center field, freshman Logan Hughes came across to score the lone run of the inning for Stetson, which brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Seminoles. The Hatters were unable to get any closer, as Florida State added two runs to their tally on the way to a 7-2 final.

Yohann Dessureault and Brandon Hylton each recorded multiple hits in the game, the former also doubled and scored a run. Barkett went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, the only run batted in for the Hatters.

The Hatters now await the conclusion of (2) Alabama and (3) UCF tonight. Stetson will face the loser of the game at noon tomorrow at Mike Martin Field.
