CORAL GABLES, FL -- The Stetson women's basketball team dropped its non-conference finale on Sunday, falling 77–45 to Miami (FL) at the Watsco Center.
Cameron Thomas paced the Hatters (7–4) with 17 points and six rebounds, knocking down five 3-pointers in the contest. Aleah Sorrentino added six points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Mary McMillan contributed four assists.
Stetson found success from beyond the arc, connecting on nine 3-pointers on 34 attempts, with Thomas accounting for more than half of the Hatters' makes from deep.
After falling behind 4–2 early, Stetson responded with a 5–0 run midway through the first quarter, capped by a 3-pointer from Thomas, to take a 7–4 lead. Miami answered, however, and the opening period ended tied at 13–13. The Hatters leaned on their perimeter shooting in the quarter, as all 13 of their points came from beyond the arc.
Miami used a run early in the second quarter to build a 22–16 advantage before Stetson countered with five straight points, highlighted by a bucket from Promise Keshi, to cut the deficit to 22–21. The Hurricanes closed the half on a surge of their own, sending Stetson into the break trailing 34–23.
The Hurricanes continued to build their lead coming out of halftime, stretching the margin to 55–31 by the end of the third quarter. Stetson found some success inside late in the frame, scoring four of its eight points in the paint
Miami extended its advantage in the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to 72–37 before Stetson closed on a brief 5–0 run, capped by a Sophie Locatelli 3-pointer with 1:27 remaining. The Hurricanes responded down the stretch to seal the 77–45 final.
The Hatters will return to action at the Insight Credit Union Arena at the Edmunds Center for the start of ASUN Conference play as they host the Central Arkansas Bears on Thursday, January 1 at 11:00 AM.
