DeLand, Fla. - vThe Stetson Hatter softball team returned to action at Patricia Wilson Field on day two of the 2025 Hatter Classic, facing off with the Wofford Terriers and Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. The Hatters opened the day witha walk-off, extra-inning 1-0 win over Wofford, before falling to Bethune-Cookman 6-3 to close out the day.Â
Fan's were treated to a true pitcher's duel in the day's first game, as Arnold (1-1) and Wofford ace Abby Greenwood combined to allow a single run on 12 hits while each going the distance.Â
After cruising through the first two innings, Arnold danced around danger in the third, when Wofford (6-3) put runners at the corners with nobody out. The Stetson (7-3) righty was able to escape unharmed though, getting a groundout to shortstop, a weak flyout to right-center field, and a lineout to third base to get out of the jam.Â
Starting with the groundout to short, Arnold retired nine straight Terriers before her streak was broke up with a leadoff single in the sixth inning, when Wofford again threatened. She was once again up to the test however, inducing a soft ground ball to second base to strand the go-ahead run at third.Â
Stetson appeared poised to cash in on the opportunity in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases on single from third baseman
Amber Chumley, a fielder's choice from first baseman
Devon Weller, and a walk from catcher
Dylan Anthony, but the Hatters were unable to push the run across.Â
With neither side able to push the deciding run across in the seventh, the game went to extra innings, where Wofford immediately put pressure on Arnold, moving the tie-break runner to third on a leadoff single, but the Stetson hurler was again up to the challenge, getting groundouts to shortstop, pitcher, and shortstop to end the threat.Â
The Hatters went quietly in the bottom of the eighth and Arnold set the Terriers down in order in the top of the ninth thanks to a diving catch by centerfielder
Kami Eppley, who doubled off the runner at second. A flyout to left ended the inning.Â
That would be all the window the Hatters needed. Chumley was placed on second and Weller worked a walk, before Anthony delivered the game-winner, knocing a sharp single to right field to plate Chumley and give Stetson the 1-0 win.Â
Arnold earned her first complete game of the season, limiting the Terriers to just seven hits while striking out two in 9.0 innings of work.Â
The day's second game saw Bethune-Cookman (4-7) build a 5-0 lead through four innings before the Stetson bats were able to respond in the bottom of the fifth inning.Â
Right fielder
Gia Napoli got things started with a one-out single and advanced to second on a throwing error, and shortstop
Addison Foster picked up a single through the left side to force a pitching change. Chumley welcomed the new Wildcat pitcher with an RBI single to plate Napoli and put the Hatters on the board, and then Eppley moved the runners over to second and third with a productive out. Pinch hitter
Riley Venn then stepped to the plate and delivered a single back up the middle, scoring both runners and cutting the Wildcat lead to 5-3 after five innings of play.Â
Bethune got a run back in the top of the sixth to cap the game's scoring at 6-3.Â
Foster and Chumley each had a pair of hits in the game, while Venn picked up a pair of RBI.Â
The Hatters close out the Classic against Bethune-Cookman tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 PM.Â
