DELAND, Fla. – Freshman Ava Braswell was outstanding on the mound Sunday, throwing a four-hit shutout to lead the Stetson Hatters to a 2-0 victory over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.
The Hatters struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Addison Foster reached first on an error by the Wildcats, advanced to second on a ground ball, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Nadia English then put the ball in play, and another error by Bethune-Cookman allowed Foster to score.
The game remained quiet until the bottom of the fourth. Dylan Anthony walked to lead off the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Alivia Taibl. Annabella McClerran followed with a double down the left-field line, putting runners on second and third. Riley Venn then grounded out to second, allowing Taibl to score, giving Stetson a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Braswell gave up a single to center and another to right field. However, Gia Napoli showcased her arm strength by fielding the ball cleanly and throwing out the runner attempting to advance to third. Braswell remained in control, retiring the side in the seventh on just six pitches to seal the 2-0 shutout victory. She allowed four hits and struck out three.
Stetson will host the Stetson Invitational next weekend, beginning on Friday, February 21, with games against Florida Atlantic at 3:00 p.m. and Marist at 5:30 p.m.
