Stetson Splits Day 1 of Stetson Invitational

DeLand, Fla. – Stetson softball split the opening day of the Stetson Invitational, falling to Florida Atlantic 8-5 before bouncing back with an 8-3 victory over Marist.

Against Florida Atlantic, the Hatters found themselves down 4-0 in the fourth inning before getting on the board with an RBI single from Santana, scoring Eppley from third. The Owls extended their lead to 8-1, but Stetson rallied in the seventh inning, scoring four runs. Devon Weller hit a two-run double, narrowing the deficit to 8-5. Despite the late push, the Hatters were unable to get any closer and fell 8-5.

In the second game, Hayley Arnold took the circle for Stetson, earning the win after pitching six strong innings. She allowed two runs on five hits, with one walk and one strikeout, extending her scoreless innings streak to 15 before two runs scored in the sixth.

The Hatters wasted no time getting on the scoreboard against Marist, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. They added to their lead in the third, with Madelyn Synoracki reaching base with a single, advancing on a wild pitch, and later scoring on Weller's walk. Stetson then exploded for five runs in the fourth inning. Emily Santana and Gia Napoli reached base, and Addison Foster's infield single brought in the first run. Synoracki loaded the bases with a bunt single, followed by a run-scoring single from Nadia English. Eppley's sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 5-0, and Weller's walk loaded the bases again. Dylan Anthony then came through with a two-RBI double to right-center, giving Stetson a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Hatters added one more run in the sixth inning to make it 8-2. Caitlyn Kulczyski came in to close the game in the seventh, and Stetson held on for the 8-3 win. Arnold picked up her fourth win of the season, and all of Stetson's starters reached base safely, with the team tying its season high of 14 hits.

Stetson will return for day two of the Stetson Invitational on Saturday, February 22. The Hatters will face Long Island at 3:00 p.m. and then rematch Marist at 5:30 p.m.
