DELAND, Fla. --Freshman Hayley Arnold and sophomore Caitlin Mullen combined to throw a shutout in Game 1 of the Frank Griffin Classic on Friday as the Stetson Hatters blanked the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights 6-0. Stetson then followed up with Caitlyn Kulczyski and Kennedy Temple combining for a shutout 1-0 over Binghamton.
"I am very proud of how we came out today and competed," said Head Coach Shellie Cousins. "We saw a lot of good things from our team and can use this momentum going into tomorrow. I was very excited to see some young kids step in and contribute. Our pitching staff did an excellent job keeping two good hitting teams off balance and we had some clutch hitting in game two to propel us to a win."
Arnold started the first game off on fire, striking out the side in the top of the first and quickly bringing the Hatters up to bat in her first collegiate start. Stetson loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and Kami Eppley drew a walk to bring in Addison Foster for a 1-0 lead. Madelyn Synoracki was up next and hit a ground ball back to the pitcher. The pitcher fielded it but threw it away from the catcher allowing a second run for the Hatters to score in the inning. After another 1-2-3 inning from Arnold, the Hatters tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second. Amber Chumley picked up her first career hit and RBI on a double that scored Gia Napoli. Chumley then came around and scored on a fielding error to make it 4-0.
Arnold continued to work as she completed five innings giving up only one hit and struck out six for her first win of her career. Stetson added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Dylan Anthony and an RBI triple for Addison Foster. Mullen came in relief and went two innings giving up only one hit as the Hatters claimed a 6-0 victory. Every started reached base safely for the Hatters as they collected 8 hits and 6 walks.
For the second game of the night Kulczyski drew the start for Stetson. She was dealing as she delivered five scoreless innings giving up only three hits and struck out three. The Hatters rewarded her effort in the bottom of the fifth. Gia Napoli snuck one through the left side and swiped second base giving Stetson a runner in scoring position. Foster was able to loop a hit into left field to bring her in to score to make it 1-0. Kennedy Temples made her first career appearance out of the bullpen. She went two innings giving up only one hit to get the save.
Stetson will look to continue their hot start to the season tomorrow as they host FDU at 3:00pm and Chattanooga at 5:30pm at Patricia Wilson Field.
