CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second time in their last three meetings, the Stetson Hatters defeated the Miami Hurricanes on the road, cruising to an 11-2 victory on Wednesday night. It marked the Hatters' second straight game reaching 11 runs, both of which came on the road. Additionally, it was their fifth win over a Power 5 program this season.
The offense was clicking for Stetson, with all nine starters reaching base safely. The Hatters outhit Miami 10-8 and went 6-for-18 (.333) with runners in scoring position. On the other hand, Stetson pitchers limited Miami to just 1-for-6 (.167) with runners in scoring position. Lorenzo Meola led the way with three hits, while freshman Foster Apple drove in three RBIs.
Senior Justin Solimine (2-0) got the win for Stetson (14-12), throwing three shutout innings, allowing just one hit, no walks, and striking out one. Dylan Jacobs, Zane Coppersmith, and Bryce Gluckman all pitched an inning of shutout ball, with Coppersmith and Gluckman each recording two strikeouts.
Stetson wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the third inning. Isaiah Barkett got things started with a double down the left field line to bring in one run, and later a throwing error would bring in two more.
The Hatters' pitchers kept Miami off the board in the bottom half of the third, and the offense exploded again in the fourth, adding five more runs, highlighted by RBI singles off the bats of Juan De La Cruz and Lorenzo Meola, which brought the score to 8-0 in favor of the Hatters.
The Hatters weren't finished yet, pushing their lead to 9-0 in the fifth on a two-out RBI double by Apple. Miami responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 9-1.
Stetson added to their cushion in the seventh, with Meola's two-out single bringing in another run to make it 11-1. The Hurricanes scored once more in the eighth, but the Hatters cruised to an 11-2 victory.
The team will now turn its focus back to conference play as they head to West Georgia for a series that begins on Friday, March 28 at 6:00 PM.
