PROVO, UT – The Stetson Hatters struggled on Thursday, falling to the BYU Cougars 10-2 in snowy conditions on the road.
Junior TJ Melani (0-1) took the mound for Stetson (8-6) but was tagged with the loss. Senior Justin Solimine provided a bright spot, throwing 3.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen. He allowed three hits, two walks, and struck out three batters.
Offensively, the Hatters were led by Lopez, who went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Juan De La Cruz also contributed, going 1-for-4 with a double.
Trailing 9-0, Stetson finally got on the board in the eighth inning. De La Cruz scored the Hatters' first run, bringing the score to 9-1.
BYU added another run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 10-1, but Stetson responded in the ninth with an RBI single from Lopez, cutting the lead to 10-2. However, the Hatters' rally came up short, and the game ended with that score.
Stetson will look to bounce back in game three of the four-game series tomorrow, Friday afternoon, at 5:00 PM ET.
