DELAND, Fla. – Juniors Evan Griffis and Landon Moran each recorded three hits to help lead Stetson past South Florida, 5-3, on Tuesday night in the Hatters' return to Melching Field. The win completes a season sweep of the Bulls for the second straight year.
Senior Justin Solimine (2-0) earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing four strong innings for the Hatters (30-16). The right-hander allowed one run on three hits, walked one, and struck out four. Freshman Andrew Lepine followed with 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out one and walking none. Ty Van Dyke closed it out in the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. Along with starter Turner Spoljaric, Stetson's pitching staff held South Florida to just 1-for-9 (.111) with runners in scoring position.
In addition to his three hits, Moran had two RBIs to lead the Hatters. Griffis added an RBI to his three-hit showing as well. Junior Isaiah Barkett also chipped in for Stetson, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding an RBI. Danny Perez rounded out the Hatters multi-hit performances with a pair of singles as Stetson out-hit the Bulls at a 14-5 clip.
Down 2-0 early, the Hatters quickly responded in the bottom of the first with five straight singles, including RBI knocks from Moran and Nelphie Lopez, to tie the game.
After South Florida pulled even at 3-3, Stetson reclaimed the lead in the fifth when Juan De La Cruz scored on a Moran sacrifice fly. The Hatters added one more in the sixth on an RBI single from Barkett, and the bullpen did the rest to lock down the win.
Stetson continues its homestand this weekend with a three-game series against ASUN foe West Georgia, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
