DeLAND, Fla. – The Stetson Hatters rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat Jacksonville, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon, completing a series sweep in their final home game of the season.
Senior Ty Van Dyke (6-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for Stetson (36-17, 23-4), tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts. Fellow senior Justin Solimine was also strong in relief, working 3.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out one.
At the plate, junior Lorenzo Meola led the way, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman Foster Apple had a breakout performance, finishing 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Paul Napolitano added two hits in four at-bats and drove in two runs, including his first career RBI, while Isaiah Barkett extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a leadoff single.
Trailing 5-0, the Hatters first put runs on the board in the third inning. Stetson's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Meola and a two-run double from Apple. The homer by Meola was his tenth of the season and his second of the weekend.
The Hatters kept the deficit at 5-4 before tying the score in the sixth. Stetson scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Napolitano, which evened the score at 5-5.
The Hatters tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Napolitano, then took the lead for good in the eighth when Napolitano drove in his second run of the day. Van Dyke closed out the game with authority, finishing the eighth and ninth to secure the win.
Stetson wraps up the regular season on the road next weekend at FGCU before heading into the ASUN Championship.
