DELAND, Fla. — The Stetson Hatters capped off their non-conference slate in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night, rallying from a three-run deficit to earn a thrilling 6-5 walk-off win in 10 innings over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at Melching Field.
In their final non-conference game of the season, the Hatters tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a clutch two-run single from Jordan Taylor, then walked it off in the 10th on a base hit through the left side by Juan De La Cruz.
Senior Ty Van Dyke (4-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Stetson (33-17). The right-hander threw a shutout top of the tenth, giving up one hit, issuing no walks and striking out one. Junior Mason Davenport kept the Hatters within range by throwing 3.2 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with three walks and seven strikeouts, a season-high. Sophomore southpaw Matthew Heyl made the start, striking out three in a shutout first inning.
The Wildcats surged ahead with a four-run rally, seizing a 5-2 lead and putting the Hatters on the ropes late. But Stetson prevailed.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Jayden Hylton stepped off the bench and delivered a clutch pinch-hit single. Pinch-runner Sam Downey then raced all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt before Danny Perez plated him with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to two — but with two outs, the Hatters were down to their final breath.
Refusing to go quietly, Stetson loaded the bases. Isaiah Barkett and Juan De La Cruz worked back-to-back walks, and Landon Moran was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive. Then, with the crowd on edge, Jordan Taylor delivered, ripping a two-run single into right-center to tie the game and send it to extras.
In the 10th, Perez doubled with two outs, setting the stage for De La Cruz's walk-off heroics.
With the win, Stetson improves to 33-17 and looks to carry momentum into its final home series of the regular season, hosting Jacksonville this weekend at Melching Field.
