Danny Perez Walks it Off in 5-4 Win over Jacksonville

Team's second straight walk-off to set program record in conference wins

DELAND, FL – The Stetson Hatters set a program record for conference wins with a thrilling 5-4 walk-off victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins on Friday afternoon at Melching Field. Freshman Danny Perez delivered the game-winning hit today, securing Stetson's second consecutive walk-off win and their 21st win in ASUN play.

Senior Ty Van Dyke (5-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for Stetson (34-17, 21-4). The right-hander tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out two. Sophomore Jake Gorelick also dealt on the mound, pitching four scoreless innings while giving up one hit, one walk, and recording one strikeout.

The Hatters were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Junior Landon Moran came across to score the lone run of the inning for Stetson on a sacrifice fly from Foster Apple and get them on the board.

The Dolphins broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the third inning, when the Hatters got back on the scoreboard. Stetson scored twice on junior Lorenzo Meola's two-run homer, his eighth of the season, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Dolphins.

Stetson kept the Dolphins off the board before rallying to even it up at four in the seventh. Following a leadoff single, Jordan Taylor came around to score on a two-out pinch hit RBI single off the bat of junior Jayden Hylton.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning, when Apple and Nelphie Lopez reached base via a walk and hit by pitch, respectively. Freshman Sam Downey then laid down a perfect bunt down the left field line, earning his first career hit and loading the bases. With no outs and the bases full, Perez singled through the right side to bring home Apple for the winning run.

Stetson will return to action tomorrow for Senior Day at Melching Field, hosting Jacksonville for game two of the series at 3:00 PM. Follow along on social media and at GoHatters.com for updates.
