CHARLESTON, S.C. — Stetson (3-2-0) earned a 3-0 road victory over The Citadel (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon, scoring all three goals in the second half at Washington Light Infantry Field.
"Today was a performance full of personality and grit," said Head Coach Jamie Souza. "We thank The Citadel for getting the game on as the weather they've had made the field a very challenging surface today. On top of the that it's this group's 3rd 10+ hour trip in 6 days. We found it a little challenging to get going and The Citadel had an effective game plan, however I still felt we were in control but needed to tweak the game plan due to conditions. The players made that adjustment in the second half, showed great character, won our battles and had too much quality on the day. I'm proud of this group. We keep growing and developing."
The first half was a defensive battle, with both teams holding firm. Goalkeeper Clare Boesel came up big for the Hatters, making key saves early and late in the half to keep the match scoreless. Stetson generated several offensive opportunities, including shots from Stella Comana and Lily Sargent-Burns, but went into halftime tied 0-0 despite out shooting the Bulldogs.
The Hatters came out strong after the break. Just over six minutes into the second half, Eva McCoy broke the deadlock with her second career goal, giving Stetson a 1-0 lead. Alyssa Stevens added to the advantage in the 64th minute, finishing a pass from Madison Bell to notch her second career goal. Bell then capped off the scoring in the 80th minute with her first collegiate goal, assisted by Kat Marx, sealing the 3-0 victory.
Boesel anchored the defense with three saves in 84 minutes of action, preserving the clean sheet.
The Hatters head to Tallahassee on September 4 to take on nationally ranked Florida State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
