FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Stetson men's soccer team officially punched its ticket to the ASUN Championship on Saturday night, battling through a furious second-half push from FGCU to earn a 2-2 draw at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Valentin Fontaine scored twice for the Hatters, while goalkeeper Murillo Mello turned away nine shots as Stetson (6-7-3, 3-3-1 ASUN) secured a crucial point on the road and guaranteed itself a place in the conference tournament.
Stetson twice grabbed the lead behind Fontaine, but FGCU (5-6-4, 1-3-3 ASUN) answered both times from the penalty spot. The Eagles controlled much of the possession and finished with a 23-8 advantage in shots and an 11-3 edge in shots on goal, forcing the Hatters to absorb pressure throughout the night.
Mello proved pivotal in keeping Stetson in front early and preserving the draw late. The freshman made nine saves, seven of which came after halftime, as the Hatters withstood an extended FGCU push over the closing stages.
The Eagles generated the first dangerous chance of the night in the seventh minute, but Mello turned away Christian Nobo's attempt. He was called upon again in the 30th minute, stopping Brooks Beeman to keep the match scoreless.
Stetson made its opportunity count at the other end.
In the 32nd minute, Fontaine broke through to give the Hatters a 1-0 advantage. The sophomore found the back of the net at the 31:08 mark, putting Stetson ahead despite FGCU holding much of the early attacking pressure.
The advantage lasted just over seven minutes. FGCU was awarded a penalty in the 39th minute and Aron Martinez converted from the spot to level the match at 1-1 heading toward halftime.
Stetson responded quickly after the break.
After Israel Daniels and Fontaine each generated attempts in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, the Hatters earned a corner in the 55th minute. Less than 30 seconds later, Fontaine struck again.
Benjamin Donato provided the setup and Fontaine finished at 55:03 to restore Stetson's advantage at 2-1 and complete his first brace of the season. Fontaine finished the night with both of Stetson's goals, putting two of his three shots on frame and accounting for four points.
FGCU immediately began searching for another equalizer, forcing Mello into three saves over the next eight minutes. The Eagles eventually earned a second penalty in the 69th minute, and Martinez converted again to bring the match level at 2-2.
From there, the match became a test of Stetson's ability to withstand pressure.
FGCU continued to push numbers forward over the final 20 minutes. Mello stopped Job Choute in the 75th minute before the Eagles began a sustained attack over the closing 11 minutes.
The Hatters faced 11 FGCU attacking actions from 79:27 through 89:56 without allowing the go-ahead goal. Mello made four saves during that stretch alone, denying Michael Ndiweni, Emilio Rossi, Nobo and Flavio D'Angelo as FGCU searched for a late winner.
Stetson also defended seven second-half corner kicks as the Eagles finished the period with 14 shots. Despite the pressure, the Hatters held firm and left Fort Myers with the point they needed to secure their place in the ASUN postseason.
Mello's nine saves marked a season high and helped Stetson overcome FGCU's 23 total shots. The freshman faced 11 shots on goal and allowed only the Eagles' two penalty kicks to get past him.
Fontaine, meanwhile, continued Stetson's recent offensive surge with his two-goal performance. Donato picked up his third assist of the season on Fontaine's second goal.
The result extended Stetson's strong late-season stretch to 4-1-1 over its last six matches. After beginning ASUN play 1-3, the Hatters have gone unbeaten in their last three conference contests, taking seven points with victories over Lipscomb and Jacksonville and Saturday's draw at FGCU.
Most importantly, Stetson will be playing postseason soccer.
With the road point, the Hatters officially clinched a berth in the ASUN Championship and will now turn their attention toward positioning in the conference table with one regular-season match remaining.
Stetson returns home for that regular-season finale on Saturday, Oct. 31, when the Hatters welcome Central Arkansas to the Athletic Training Center. Kickoff in DeLand is scheduled for 7 p.m.
