DELAND, Fla. — The Stetson Hatters dropped an 11-7 decision to St. John's Red Storm on Sunday night at Melching Field at Conrad Park in a high-scoring contest that was halted in the middle of the eighth inning due to travel time constraints.
The Hatters (0-3) showcased offensive firepower throughout the evening, but a pair of big innings from the Red Storm proved to be the difference.
Stetson erased an early deficit with a four-run first inning. Juan De la Cruz, Jack Harley, and Renzo Gonzalez each reached to spark the rally. A wild pitch allowed De la Cruz to score before Foster Apple drove in a run with a groundout. Yohann Dessureault followed with a sacrifice fly, and Landon Russell capped the inning with an RBI double as the Hatters matched St. John's with four runs in the frame.
The Red Storm answered with a three-run second inning to take a 7-4 lead, but Stetson responded again in the third. Russell drew a walk and later scored on a single by freshman Samuel Fernandez, who collected his first collegiate hit and RBI. Corey Robinson followed with an RBI triple — the Hatters' first triple of the season — to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Stetson plated another run in the fifth when De la Cruz reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Russell to score and trim the margin to 7-7. However, St. John's broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning with four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run, extending the lead to 11-7.
The Hatters threatened but could not close the gap before the game concluded in the eighth.
On the mound, freshman Brayden Toro made his Stetson debut in the start. Trace Hartman provided a bright spot in relief, tossing 3.2 hitless innings while striking out two and walking one. Andrew Lepine added 2.2 innings, allowing two earned runs without issuing a walk.
