TAMPA, Fla. — Stetson softball dropped both games of a Wednesday doubleheader to the University of South Florida, falling 4-3 in 10 innings and 8-5 at USF Softball Stadium.
In the opener, the Hatters outhit USF 9-8 and drew five walks but stranded 11 runners in the extra-inning defeat. South Florida capitalized on two first-inning errors to take a 2-0 lead, scoring both runs unearned.
Stetson answered in the second inning.
Gabby David walked and
Jahnnie Patterson doubled before
Berkley Demetter delivered an RBI single to right to score David. Patterson later crossed the plate on a throwing error to tie the game at 2-2.
USF regained the lead in the fifth on a double and an RBI single, but the Hatters responded again in the sixth.
Gaby Bauer worked a walk and came around to score on David's RBI double to center, evening the score at 3-3.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th, when USF used a pair of singles and a fielder's choice to push across the winning run.
Jenna Johnston started and allowed two unearned runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Ava Braswell was strong in relief, tossing 8 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out three.
Irianis Garcia and Bauer each recorded two hits.
In the nightcap, Stetson jumped in front with a four-run third inning. David doubled to start the rally, Demetter added an RBI double, and
Annabella McClerren singled to set the stage for Edmiaston's three-run home run to right field, giving the Hatters a 4-3 lead.
USF responded with two runs in the fourth, including a solo homer, and added three more unearned runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-4.
Edmiaston struck again in the sixth with her second home run of the game — her first multi-homer performance of the season — to cut the deficit to 8-5. However, Stetson was unable to complete the comeback.
Kennedy Temples started Game 2, allowing four earned runs over three innings. Johnston worked the final three innings, surrendering four runs, only one of which was earned. Edmiaston finished the game with two home runs and four RBIs, extending her hitting streak to 11 games. David and Demetter each contributed doubles in the loss.
Stetson will return home Friday to host Columbia and St John's at Patricia Wilson Field for the Stetson Inviational. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
