RALEIGH, N.C. — Stetson dropped a pair of games Friday at the Marucci Classic at Dail Softball Stadium, falling 10-6 to Michigan State before coming up short in a 4-2 loss to NC State.
In the opener against Michigan State, Stetson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on home runs from Annabella McClerren and Nicole Edmiaston. McClerren led off the game with a solo shot, and Edmiaston followed a batter later with a homer of her own to give the Hatters the early advantage.
Michigan State responded with an eight-run inning in the bottom half to take control of the game and move ahead 8-2.
Despite the early deficit, Stetson continued to battle offensively. Irianis Garcia added a two-run homer, while Nadia English delivered a two-RBI double in the third inning to help the Hatters trim the deficit to 10-6.
After the early surge from Michigan State, Stetson's pitching staff settled in.
Hayley Arnold provided stability in relief, tossing 5.1 innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out two batters as the Hatters held the Spartans scoreless the rest of the way. However, Stetson was unable to generate additional offense and ultimately fell 10-6.
In the second game of the day, Stetson kept things tight against NC State. The Hatters collected five hits, including a two-run home run from
Amber Chumley.
NC State held a 2-0 lead entering the sixth inning before Chumley connected on a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2 and give Stetson new momentum late. The Wolfpack answered in the bottom half of the inning, however, as Hannah Church hit a two-run home run that proved to be the difference in the 4-2 final.
Gia Napoli also recorded a double earlier in the game for the Hatters, but a key play at the plate cut down a potential run and halted the rally.
Ava Braswell started in the circle for Stetson in the nightcap, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out two.
Kennedy Temples recorded the final out in relief.
Gaby Bauer added a strong offensive performance, collecting two hits in three at-bats.
