Hatters Fall at Coastal Carolina, 2-0, Despite 15-Shot Effort

CONWAY, S.C. — Stetson men's soccer was unable to overcome an early deficit Saturday evening, falling 2-0 to Coastal Carolina at the CCU Soccer Stadium.

The Hatters finished with a 15-12 advantage in total shots and generated eight corner kicks, but Coastal Carolina made the most of its opportunities with seven attempts on frame.

Stetson created chances throughout the match, particularly after halftime when the Hatters recorded nine of their 15 shots. Mauricio Restrepo led the attack with four attempts, including one on goal, while Andre Casas added three shots with one on target. Valentin Fontaine also placed one of his two attempts on frame.

Coastal Carolina carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime before adding a second goal in the second half to extend its lead.

Matthew McCall went the full 90 minutes in goal for the Hatters and recorded five saves, marking his second consecutive start between the posts. Stetson's defense faced increased pressure late in the match after playing down a man following a second-half red card.

Despite being held scoreless for the first time this season, Stetson continued to generate opportunities through the final whistle and finished with more total shots and twice as many corner kicks as the Chanticleers.

The loss moves the Hatters to 0-2-1 on the season, while Coastal Carolina improves to 1-1-1.

Stetson will now turn its attention to ASUN play, traveling to Louisville, Kentucky, to face Bellarmine on Saturday, Sept. 5. Kickoff from Owsley B. Frazier Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
