JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Stetson men's soccer battled ASUN-leading North Florida throughout Saturday night but couldn't find the equalizer, falling 1-0 at Hodges Stadium.
The Hatters (2-6-2, 1-3 ASUN) stayed within striking distance throughout the night against an Ospreys side that entered the match unbeaten in conference play. North Florida (7-3-1, 4-0 ASUN) ultimately made its lone goal stand despite Stetson continuing to push forward after halftime.
That pressure was most evident during a nearly 14-minute stretch early in the second half, when the Hatters kept the Ospreys under pressure from the 52nd through 65th minutes. Stetson generated seven of its 11 shots over the final 45 minutes but was unable to turn the increased attacking pressure into an equalizer.
North Florida finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots, but the margin on target was even slimmer as the Ospreys put six attempts on frame compared to four for Stetson.
Murillo Mello helped keep the Hatters in the match from the other end of the field. The freshman goalkeeper played all 90 minutes and matched his season high with five saves, four of which came after halftime as North Florida looked to add to its advantage.
Desmond Bullard and Zsombor Pall paced the Stetson attack with two shots apiece. Both put one attempt on goal, while the Hatters received shots from several different players as they searched for a breakthrough.
Saturday snapped Stetson's streak of seven consecutive matches outshooting its opponent, a run that dated back to the Hatters' Aug. 29 trip to Coastal Carolina. Even so, Stetson has continued to keep opposing attacks in check, with North Florida becoming just the second opponent over the last eight matches to attempt more shots than the Hatters.
The result moved Stetson to 2-6-2 overall and 1-3 in ASUN play, while North Florida improved to 7-3-1 and remained unbeaten atop the conference standings at 4-0.
The Hatters remain on the road next weekend as they travel to Nashville for an ASUN matchup against Lipscomb on Saturday, Oct. 3. Kickoff from the Lipscomb Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
