DeLAND, Fla. — Stetson men's soccer fell 1-0 to Georgia Southern on Tuesday night at the Athletic Training Center in the Hatters' 2026 home opener.
The Hatters continued to generate opportunities offensively, finishing with a 12-8 advantage in shots. Stetson has now outshot its opponent in three straight matches, but Georgia Southern limited the Hatters to one attempt on goal and kept Stetson off the scoreboard.
Murillo Mello helped keep the match scoreless in the opening half with a clutch penalty-kick save at the 39:21 mark. After Georgia Southern was awarded the penalty, Mello came up with the stop to preserve the 0-0 score heading into halftime.
Israel Daniels and Matthew Perez led the Stetson attack with three shots apiece, with Daniels recording the Hatters' lone shot on goal. Mello played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with the one save.
The match grew increasingly physical down the stretch, with the teams combining for 24 fouls and four yellow cards. Eight fouls and cards were recorded during a late nine-minute stretch as Stetson continued to push for an equalizer, but the Eagles held on for the 1-0 victory.
Despite the result, the Hatters once again created more attacking opportunities than their opponent, continuing a recent trend of controlling the shot count while searching for the finishing touch.
Stetson moves to 0-4-1 overall and remains 0-1-0 in ASUN play, while Georgia Southern improves to 3-1-1.
The Hatters continue their five-match homestand Saturday, Sept. 12, when they host West Florida at the Athletic Training Center. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
