At Stetson

  • Jonathan "J.J." Johnson originally joined the Stetson coaching staff in March, 2016
  • During his first stint on the Hatters' staff, JJ spent two seasons coaching the defensive line
    • Helped Davion Belk to All-PFL honors in 2016 when he had 14 tackles for loss, including 5.5 sacks
    • Also worked with the Stetson special teams and served as recruiting coordinator.
    • He returned to Stetson in January 2021 to coach the Hatters' linebackers
  • Johnson brings extensive recruiting knowledge of the fertile Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia prep ranks as well as of the Mississippi Junior Colleges

Coaching History

  • Johnson left Stetson in 2018 to return to Mississippi to Pearl River Community College where he coached the defensive line and special teams before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2019
  • He moved on in January of 2020 to coach the defensive line at UNC Pembroke through spring practice before taking the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator position at Hocking College in Ohio
  • Johnson came to Stetson the first time after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, Miss.
  • While at MGCCC, in addition to coaching the offensive line, tight ends and full backs, he also served as the head equipment manager, the facility manager and oversaw team travel
  • Following his playing career, Johnson served as an assistant defensive line coach at Belhaven in 2012 before becoming assistant offensive line/tight ends coach as a graduate assistant in 2013
  • In addition, he was the head equipment manager and facility manager at his alma mater
  • He switched back to help with the defensive line in the spring of 2014 before moving on to MGCCC

Playing Career

  • Johnson was a defensive end at Belhaven University, starting his career for the Blazers as an offensive lineman
  • By his junior year he had moved to defense where he recorded 23 tackles in eight games with 3.5 for loss before a back injury ended his playing career
  • He received both a Bachelor's (2013) and Master's from Belhaven in Sport Administration from Belhaven, which is located in Jackson, Miss.

Personal Information

  • Johnson married the former MaddieBeth Robertson, a native of Steamboat Springs, Colo., in the summer of 2021.
