Jonathan Mitchell

Jonathan Mitchell

Jonathan Mitchell, a former standout as a player at both Florida and Rutgers, begins his third season as an assistant coach at Stetson.

“I’m really excited about Jonathan,” head coach Donnie Jones said. “He brings the player experience as well as the coach experience to our staff. He brings with him the unique quality of just coming out of the professional ranks, and he’s able to relate that experience to the players. I think all of these guys want to get to that level, and he can show them that path. He’ll be really great in player development. He brings a great ability to relate. He has great personal skills and work ethic, and with his connection to the Northeast he opens up a new recruiting territory for us. He’ll add to the great chemistry of our staff.”

A native of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Mitchell comes to Stetson after spending the previous season on staff under Tom Crean at Georgia, where he served as a graduate assistant.

“I’m extremely blessed to be here with Coach Jones and I thank him for the opportunity,” Mitchell said “I’m excited to be a part of the Hatter Nation and to help build a basketball culture here that they haven’t’ seen in a long time.”

Prior to arriving at Georgia, Mitchell embarked on a seven-year professional career, playing in several European countries including Spain, Israel, France, Greece, Hungary and Iceland.

As a collegiate student-athlete, Mitchell was a reserve forward on Florida’s 2007 NCAA Championship squad as a freshman. During his sophomore season, he appeared in 35 games for the Gators before transferring to Rutgers for his final two years. In two seasons with the Scarlet Knights, Mitchell was highly productive as a player, averaging 11.8 points and 6.1 rebounds as a junior, and leading the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game as a senior.

In high school, Mitchell was named as the New York State Gatorade Player of the Year in 2006.

Mitchell graduated from Rutgers in 2011 with a degree in Communications.
