Hatters Tabbed Sixth in A-Sun Preseason Poll

Women's Soccer Stetson University

Hatters Fall to Buccaneers in Second Overtime

The Stetson women's soccer team controlled play, led East Tennessee State in shots 25-9, yet lost Sunday's game 3-2. After an all-out charge forward early in the second overtime the Hatters just missed on a few opportunities to score. ETSU counter attacked with a long ball down the center. Stetson goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia (Webster Groves, MO) was caught in between and chose to retreat rather than go after the ball but it was too late and the Buccaneers' Terri Miller (Cape Coral, FL) knocked in the golden goal.

“We beat them everywhere all over the field except the scoreboard”, Stetson head coach Julie Orlowski said. “We had 25 shots and only two goals. The game should have been out of hand by that time.”

“They had nine shots and three goals. They finished their opportunities and we didn't”, she added.

Stetson opened the scoring at 55:46 with an unassisted goal by freshman Tessa Gavilsky (Granite City, IL). It was her fourth goal of the season placing her in a tie for second on the team with sophomore Emily Yero (Orlando, FL) and senior Jennifer Hays (Jacksonville Beach, FL). Hays scored her fourth goal of the year at 83:09 with an assist going to Gavilsky. It was a perfectly placed long volley just over the goalkeepers hand and just under the crossbar. Gavilsky is now second on the team in scoring with 12 points.

The loss dropped Stetson to 7-9-1 overall and 5-5-0 in conference play. ETSU raised its record to 9-5-3 and 5-4-1. A victory Sunday would have secured a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the Hatters, instead it was the Buccaneers who are in with the win. The Hatters can guarantee themselves a playoff position next Saturday with a tie or a win over Florida Gulf Coast in DeLand. It will be senior night at the Stetson Soccer Complex.

Orlowski was able to find some positive after today's disappointing outcome. “Both times after they tied up the score, we came back with composure and not urgency. We did not panic, which for us is a positive”, she said.
