Gardner-Webb Runs Away with a Win Over the Hatters, Maclin Goes into Record Books

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Senior Janene Maclin (Chicago, Ill.) reached a milestone Thursday evening, recording her 1000th career point at Stetson University in a 61-47 loss to Gardner-Webb.  The Hatters are now 4-9 in conference action and 4-20 overall.

Gardner-Webb went on a 6-0 run to start the game and the Bulldogs held the Hatters scoreless for the first three minutes until a jumper by senior Janene Maclin put Stetson on the board at the 17:19 mark.

A 12-4 run to end the first half helped the Bulldogs into the locker room with a 20 point lead, 36-16.  The difference came at the line.  The Hatters were whistled for 13 team fouls versus five for the Bulldogs.  Stetson saw the charity strip once, going 0-1, while Gardner-Webb hit 11-19 in the first half.

Stetson came into the second half re-energized and started the second half with a 10-0 run to chip away the Bulldog lead, 36-26.

The Bulldogs finally got on the board after a five minute scoreless stretch, thanks to a last minute tip-in by Margaret Roundtree.

Stetson freshman Stacia Shepherd (Carmel, Ind.) closed the Bulldog lead to nine points on a three pointer with 7:13 remaining in the game.  Then on an assist by Shepherd, freshman Prue Kenny (Geelong, Australia) made a jumper to bring the lead down to eight, the closest Stetson would come for the rest of the game.  The Bulldogs took it from there for a 61-47 win.

Janene Maclin led the Hatters with 17 points. Maclin brought her commanding presence to the second half, recording 13 of her 17 total points in the second half.  Junior Kellie Olson (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Sharnesha Smith (Kingsland, Ga.) followed with six points each.

The Bulldogs were led by Candyse Kelly with 17 points and had two players record double-doubles.  Brittany Harmon had 11 points and 12 rebounds while LaToya Carter had 12 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the Bulldogs to victory.

The Hatters will travel to Buies Creek, North Carolina to take on conference opponent Campbell University on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
