Jacksonville, Fla. - North Florida scored six runs in the first inning and held on to beat the Hatters 8-5 Sunday afternoon at Harmon Stadium. The loss snapped Stetson's four-game win streak and cost the Hatters a sweep of the series.Â
The Hatters (17-7) fell behind early when the first four Ospreys (10-13) reached base. Jimmy Glanville was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. Two sacrifice flies, a two-run double from Travis Martin, and a run-scoring single from Andy Warren put UNF ahead 6-0 after one inning.
Nick Pugliese relieved Justin Dechert (3-1) in the first inning and kept the Hatters in it. The right-hander turned in six relief innings and allowed just two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and only one walk.Â
Â
Shane Jordan stroked three hits, including two doubles, and scored twice for Stetson.Â
Â
John Atteo (2-2) evened his record for UNF. The starter pitched into the seventh, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out just one but walked only one.
Â
Brian Pruitt came home for the Hatters on an error in the fourth to get Stetson the board. Justin Bass doubled in Shane Jordan in the fifth to make it 6-2.Â
Â
A pinch-hit single by Aaron Crittenden drove in two more in the seventh and suddenly Stetson was with two runs.Â
Â
However UNF took those runs back in the bottom of the inning on a single from Jon Dandridge and an outfield error on the same play.Â
Â
Stetson crept closer in the 8th when pinch-hitter Kevin Mierzwinski walked and later scored on UNF's fourth error of the day.
Â
North Florida's head coach Dusty Rhodes was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing a ground ball that was called fair.Â
Â
The Hatters return home for a 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night tilt with the Florida Gators at Melching Field.    Â
