Belmont Bests Hatters

DeLand, Fla. - Belmont scored four runs in the second inning and held on to beat the Hatters 7-2 Thursday night at Melching Field.  The defeat gave Stetson (38-16, 20-5 A-Sun) a season-long three-game losing streak.

Charles Lee (8-1) turned in seven and two-thirds innings in helping the Bruins (29-23, 15-10 A-Sun) top the Hatters.  Lee allowed two runs on eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

The Hatters took a first inning lead when Shane Jordan began the frame with a double and scored on Braedyn Pruitt's sacrifice fly.

Belmont quickly answered in the second, though they received a little help along the way.  Derek Wiley began the inning with a single and Daniel Wagner reached on an error.  Brady Manifold following with a single to plate the first run.  The second error of the inning brought in Wagner and gave Belmont the lead.  Matt Reynolds and Packy Elkins also delivered RBI singles to make it 4-1.

The Hatters stranded two runners at third and two more at second base before breaking through for their second run in the eighth.  Adam Tindle's two-out double brought in Justin Bass from second base to pull Stetson within 4-2.

Belmont iced it in the ninth.  Ben Petsch doubled in one run and Wiley doubled in two more.

Reynolds led the Bruins with four hits.  Wiley added three hits, two RBI, and one run scored.

Jimmy Stanley pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his second save.

Jordan continued to chip away at the Stetson career hits record.  He doubled and singled to pull within 14 hits of the Hatters record held by Ned French.

Cory Kluber (10-2) pitched into the eighth after bouncing back from the unfortunate four-run second inning.  None of the four runs were earned and the Texan finished with six strikeouts to give him 98 for the season.  That ties Lenny DiNardo's 1999 total and is the 10th-highest single season mark in Stetson history.

Casey Frawley reached base four times on two hits and two walks.  Tindle and Bass also recorded multi-hit games.

The series continues Friday night at 7:00 p.m.  Prior to the game a bronze bust of Pete Dunn will be unveiled and Mayor Bob Apgar will proclaim May 18, 2007 as Pete Dunn Day in honor of the 1,000th career win Dunn achieved last season.
