Stetson Rallies to Beat Bisons

DeLand, Fla. - On the opening day of the Atlantic Sun Conference Baseball Tournament, the regular season champion Stetson Hatters put together an eighth-inning rally to come back and edge Lipscomb 4-3 Wednesday night at Melching Field.  Cory Kluber (11-2) matched a career-high with 12 strikeouts in eight innings to carry Stetson (40-17) past Lipscomb (28-29).

The Hatters advance to the winner's bracket and will face #4 seed Jacksonville at 3:00 p.m.

Earlier in the day, #3 Belmont put up eight runs in the eighth inning to get by #4 Jacksonville 12-7 and #2 Mercer edged #5 Gardner-Webb 5-4, with an eighth-inning suicide squeeze bringing in the deciding run.

With Stetson trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the eighth, Shane Jordan was hit by a pitch to spark the Hatters comeback.  Casey Frawley followed with a walk and Braedyn Pruitt singled to load the bases.  Justin Bass then hit a bouncer to third but Brandon Cadavid's throw home went wild, allowing Jordan to score.  Adam Tindle came up next and rocketed a two-run double that gave the Hatters their first lead since the first inning and provided the 4-3 victory.

Kluber pitched out of trouble in the first inning.  Ben Williams led off the game with a single and stole both second and third, but Kluber rebounded to strike out three of the next four batters and escape without a run scoring.  He ended five of his eight innings strikeouts and equalled his career-high total set earlier this year at Campbell.

Lipscomb touched him for their first run in the second inning.  Ryan Wilkins led off with a triple and scored on a ground out to tie it up.  The Bisons then took the lead in the fifth when Williams drove in Andrew Nickerson from second base with two outs.

Caleb Joseph added to the Lipscomb lead with an eighth-inning home run.  It was the team-high eighth home run of the year for the first team all-conference catcher.

Stetson got on the board first when Shane Jordan led off with a single, went to second on an error and scored on Casey Frawley's base hit to center.

Jordan paced the Hatters with two hits, giving him a career total of 330.  Braedyn Pruitt reached base three times on a hit and two walks.  Justin Dechert pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the year.

Lipscomb starter Rex Brothers left with the lead but did not factor in the decision.  The A-Sun Freshman of the Year went seven complete innings and pitched to the first two batters in the eighth.  Brothers allowed just three runs (one earned) on four hits.  Brandon McClurg (4-4) took the loss in relief.

Lipscomb will begin Day 2 of the tournament with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch against #5 seed Gardner-Webb.  After the Stetson-Jacksonville game at 3:00 p.m., #2 seed Mercer will face #3 seed Belmont.
