Stetson Sweeps Campbell at CSU Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Stetson volleyball squad defeated conference foe Campbell, 3-0 (30-13, 30-28, 30-24) in day-two action at the Charleston Southern Invitational on Saturday.

“We played really well as a team,” said head coach Cheryl Carlson.  “We grabbed the momentum right from the start and never looked back.  We were able to stay focused, keep the momentum and close out the match in three.”

The Hatters (3-3) took control of the match early winning game one handily.  Stetson used a .233 hitting percentage and an 8-0 run mid-way through the game to run away with the opener.

Game two saw some tense moments for Stetson as Campbell (4-4) battled back from a 28-19 deficit closing the score to within one at game point.  The Hatters remained poised and Beth Slabaugh gave her squad a 2-0 advantage with a kill to end the game.  Rebecca Orzechowicz and Gina Iacona each provided five kills in game two en route to finishing the match with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.  Slabaugh also finished with double-digit kills notching 10.

The Fighting Camels took their momentum generated from the end of game two and transferred that to the beginning of the third game jumping out to a 10-6 advantage.  Stetson remained patient throughout and took advantage of Campbell's miscues to take its first at 14-13.  The Hatters did not relinquish the lead from that point and Orzechowicz provided a kill to close out the match.

“Our hitting percentage of .282 was solid, but what was a big improvement from yesterday was getting 11 service aces and only three service errors,” added Carlson.

Stetson's Karla Readshaw directed the offense recording 28 assists while Melanie Boyer was the defensive catalyst with 10 digs.

Campbell was led by a trio of players recording match highs.  Caroline Hammersly notched 35 assists, Emily Werner registered 15 kills and Melissa Harvey picked up 14 digs.

Stetson will conclude play at the CSU Invitational later today with a 3 p.m. match against North Carolina Central.
